Create and edit a timeline
Create a timeline
To create a new timeline, go to the My timelines page and click the New timeline button.
TimeDivers will ask you for the timeline name and basic details, then automatically open the editing page so you can start working on it.
Edit a timeline
There are several ways to access a timeline editing page.
From the My timelines page, click the Edit action for the timeline you want to modify.
You can also access the editor from the vertical view and the horizontal view if you are the owner of the timeline you are viewing.
The editing page brings together all the timeline management tools, including its general settings, event and period management, import and export options, and customization tools.
Timeline details
The top of the editing page displays the timeline’s main information. This area lets you quickly identify the timeline you are working on and access the available actions and tools.
Below the general information are the different work sections, arranged to make it easier to create and manage content.
Timeline settings
In the settings section, you can modify the timeline’s general information: title, description, visibility and cover image.
This information affects how the timeline is identified and presented in its reading views and, where applicable, in shared links or embedded versions.
Title
The title is the main name of the timeline.
Use a clear, recognizable title, especially if you are going to manage several timelines from your account. This title helps you identify it in My timelines and in its public or private reading views.
Description
The description provides a brief explanation of the timeline’s content, approach or purpose.
You can use it to indicate the period covered, the subject matter, the project context or any information that helps users understand what they will find when viewing it.
Visibility
Visibility determines who can access the timeline.
A public timeline can be viewed through its URL and is intended for content you want to share openly. In the future, it may also appear in a section of public timelines within TimeDivers.
An unlisted timeline is not intended to appear as general public content, but it can be viewed through a direct link. It is useful when you want to share a timeline with specific people without making it fully public.
A private timeline can only be viewed by its owner while signed in. Private timelines are not intended to be shared or embedded on other pages.
Before sharing a timeline, check its visibility to make sure it matches how you intend to use it.
Cover image
The cover image acts as the timeline’s main presentation image.
You can use it to reinforce the timeline’s subject visually or make it easier to identify. If you upload a cover image, make sure you have the right to use it.
When you add an image, you can complete its attribution fields:
Title
Name or brief description of the image.
Attribution
Author, organization, archive, repository or source to which the image should be attributed.
Source URL
Web address where the original image or reference page can be found.
License
Name of the applicable license, if any.
License URL
Web address where the license can be consulted.
Completing this information helps document the origin of the image correctly and supports the responsible use of visual materials.
List of created events and periods
This list lets you quickly review the content already created and access the actions available for each item.
Each event or period can be managed using its corresponding actions.
Share
The Share action lets you obtain a direct link to a specific event or period.
Unlike sharing the complete timeline, this link opens the selected item directly, making it easier to access a specific date, event or period.
Links to events and periods can be used in several ways:
- Share a specific event by email, messaging app or social media.
- Create links from a web page or external document.
- Link directly to an event from another event in the same timeline.
- Create relationships between events that belong to different timelines.
When a user follows one of these links, TimeDivers opens the timeline and automatically positions the view on the linked event or period.
Edit
The Edit action opens the editing form for the selected event or period.
From this form, you can modify its dates, content, tags, attachments, main image and external resources.
The complete operation of the form is explained in the Create and edit an event or period section.
Delete
The Delete action deletes the selected event or period.
Before completing the deletion, TimeDivers asks for confirmation. Once deleted, the item is removed from the timeline and its attachments are permanently deleted.
